October and Halloween

Well, for those of you who haven't heard, we took Callie to the specialist and we're waiting on the surgery for at least two years. We're really happy about that, but at the same time, we're having trouble finding an antibiotic that she won't have a reaction to and she's able to take. Right now, we're working with a medicine that we have to mix into her food but it apparently changes the taste of her food enough that it's a real battle trying to get her to take it.

In a year, they'll retest her for the condition, which she has an 80% chance of growing out of. If she still has it in a year, we'll wait another year and retest again. I'm not sure exactly when they decide that she's not going to grow out of the condition, but he said that he'd a least wait two years. So we'll see. Hopefully, she'll be clear at the next test so we don't have to continue the "Battle of the Antibiotics" chapter in our lives.

The surprise of the trip was that the specialist wanted to go ahead and test Gabriel for the condition as well. He said that there was about a 50% chance that he had it, and if it did, it would probably be worse in him. So Gabriel had a VCUG (which includes getting a catheter -- heartbreaking!), but I felt like they did a MUCH better job at Mayo then they did at our local hospital. I decided then and there that no matter how much extra it ended up costing us, Callie was going to get her retest at Mayo's Hospital.

We did get to have a little bit of fun on our trip by extending it a little bit and driving up to the Mall of America after the appointments. We spent a little over a day there and saw maybe a third of it! It was pretty fun. Got some cute clothes for the kids! :)

The rest of the month? Let's see. Gabriel's really close to sitting up on his own. He's liking his bouncing chair that hangs in the doorway and his excersaucer a lot. He's a very smiley boy who sleeps great and travels like we're torturing him. Lots of fun! Especially with the holidays coming up and a 16 hour drive ahead of us. At least we'll be able to visit for a good amount of time and maybe he'll forget about the "torture" of the carseat when he gets loved and cuddled and lots of cousins to entertain him!

Callie is quite the entertainer. We sing together and dance and play with Gabriel. She's a really awesome mommy's helper as well. She has had some little temper tantrums lately. Mostly at home, not usually in public, but it's still irritating. I guess it's just the age that she's trying to see how far that fat little toe can go over the line. We had a waitress today at lunch that said how good she was, and I thought, yeah, if only you could have seen her this morning! At least, 99% of the time she's good when we're out so we can trick people into thinking we have a perfect angel! :)

I have a fall decorations grinch wandering around the farm. So far, something (a critter) has chewed up one of my gourds, eaten a piece of my indian corn, and taken a huge chunk out of my "Philip" pumpkin. (I have a pumpkin Booker family out on my porch. It was really cute.) It's times like this I'd really like a dog to keep the varmints away. But then, I think about taking care of said dog all the time, and I'm back to enjoying my poop free back yard . . .

Other than that, we're just continuing our daily grind. Trying to keep up with the laundry and chores while still spending enough time with the kids that we don't feel like we're missing out. It's often difficult to strike a balance and you can tell from the pretty much constant state of our house which one usually wins out! :) Oh well, I won't be looking back at my life on my death bed wishing my house would have been cleaner! lol

I hope everyone had a great Halloween! Have a wonderful start to your week. God bless you and yours!

Sunday Morning

Yesterday, Callie came into my room while I was finishing up getting ready for church by putting on my jewelry. Callie: Mommy, you're very pretty. Me: Callie, that's very sweet. Thank you! Callie: You're welcome. Daddy's pretty too! Me: Oh Callie, you need to go tell him that . . . :)

Meanwhile, back at the Farm . . .

We're having some exciting happenings around the Booker Farm so I thought I'd write a little bit about what's going on with the kiddos. Callie Callie is so excited that we now have two dogs and three cats. Their names are (dogs) Belle and Ariel, (cats) Duchess, Dixie, and Thomas O'Malley -- Tom for short. She is very excited to be wrapping up another school year and looking forward to our travels this summer. She is taking on more responsibility around the house (which I love) and doing an excellent job for the most part in taking care of all the animals. I'm certainly enjoying watching her grow and blossom in so many ways, but this is especially significant to me. Philip and I are really striving to raise our children to be responsible, caring, and kind adults! I'm now teaching her on Wednesday Night Bible Class and I love observing her for the first time in a classroom setting as her teacher as well. She is a delight to have in class, if I may s...

Sometimes it's hard . . .

I feel like I've finally awoken from a long, chaotic dream. The past couple of weeks have gone so much more smoothly. The first 3 (or so) months with a new baby just throws my world upside down and inside out. While I'm in it, I find it hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel --  that time when we all adapt to each other and find our new routine. I'm not saying I don't love it, because I do. I just don't love all of it! So I'll do a quick little catch up, write Nolan's birth story in another post and we'll be back on track. For a little bit at least. I think I've said before that I love writing. I mean love it. But for some reason, I've never been good at keeping a journal. I really want to. There are so many moments I want to make sure I write down and remember and I want to be good at keeping track of everything. But over and over again I prove it's just not something that I'm consistent with. It irritates me to the point th...
